How to Install Undermount Kitchen Sinks

Undermount kitchen sinks are growing in popularity for a number of reasons. They are an important component of modern kitchen design due to their clean, organic appearance. They are also a bit easier to keep clean because of the lower likelihood that dust and grime are going to collect where the sink meets the counter. They’re also somewhat more difficult to install than a traditional sink, so you are going to want to be careful. Keep the instructions that came with your sink on hand and do not diverge from them, but the basic installation procedure is outlined for you below.

  1. Make sure your countertop is made of the right material. Undermount sinks are quite heavy, and they’ll be even heavier once they have been filled up with water and dishes. If you don’t want to risk your sinks simply falling out of the counter, do not install one unless the countertop is made of a solid, sturdy material like granite or marble. If your countertop is made of thin wood or particle board, do not proceed without replacing the countertop first.
  2. Go out and buy the sink. There are lots of manufacturers and models, but the best choice is going to be an undermount stainless steel kitchen sink. It will give you the best balance between durability and cost, and is relatively easy to keep clean.
  3. Using the template that came with your sink, cut the necessary hole in your countertop. This, as well as the rest of the installation, will go much easier if you are able to remove the countertop. If the sink did not come with a template or there is any doubt as to your ability to do this properly and without any mistakes, contact a professional to do this part for you.
  4. Thoroughly polish the edge of the new hole that was just cut. This is done for two reasons. It will smooth out the edge, but it will also dramatically improve its durability. If you don’t do this, you run a high risk of the countertop cracking later on.
  5. Using alcohol, clean the underside of the countertop very thoroughly. It has to be completely free of dust, grit, or any other reside if you expect any undermount kitchen sinks to adhere properly to it.
  6. Run a bead of calk along the edge of the hole on the underside of the countertop, then carefully position the sink over it. Remember, undermount kitchen sinks need to be installed exactly the way the instructions that come with them say so if you want to ensure that they last.
  7. Following the instructions that came with your sink exactly, mix up the epoxy and apply it to the sink. Even though it may seem to set completely within only a few minutes, that is far from the truth. In order to ensure that your sink doesn’t simply fall out of the counter, give it at least one full day to cure before proceeding.
  8. Replace the countertop and connect your plumbing as necessary. Congratulations; you’re done!
